>>> The fiction series “Patagonian Winds”, by Invercine & Wood, is one of the ten selected projects in the Pitch Copro Series section, an announcement made during the opening of the event. In addition, our country starred in the exhibition of the first images of “Inés del Alma Mía”, a co-production by TVE, Boomerang Television and Chilevisión, directed by the Chilean Nicolás Acuña (“Sitiados”) and Alejandro Bazzano (“La casa de papel”). Acuña is part of the Chilean delegation at this Conecta FICTION.
>>> Six of the most important producers of serial content in Chile will participate as of today in the online version of Conecta Fiction, a key event for the co-production of television series between America and Europe, and in which professionals will look to find new partners, seal co-production deals, and effectively expand their network of contacts.
>>> CinemaChile, sectoral brand of Prochile, will work in the promotion of national projects and talents, carrying an agenda of multiple meetings during the virtual event.
More than a dozen fiction series with a national seal will be presented in this unique online version of the CONECTA Fiction Reboot 2020 audiovisual market. From a private investigator immersed in the end of the world, a woman leader of the first drug trafficking network in Latin America, to taking hostages in a minimarket, going through the recent Chilean social revolution and traveling in the history of the longest-running musical group in the world; the thematic and ambitious projects in development will seek to find the perfect partners to bring each of the stories to the small screen, transporting viewers to places of wonder such as the Torres del Paine in the extreme south of Chile, or the Atacama desert, in the north.
After the global cancellation of events caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Conecta FICTION organization decided to carry on with a hybrid event that will take place in two stages: one virtual and the other face-to-face. The online format, inaugurated this morning, will run until June 18, focusing on facilitating networking tools with two connection zones, one personalized and the other within the community.
Conecta FICTION is the most important co-production event for fiction series between America and Europe, becoming a successful professional connection bridge for Chilean productions. As an example of the above and how the projects presented in previous editions have prospered, today the first images of the series “Inés del Alma Mía” co-produced by TVE, Boomerang Television and Chilevisión, and which was directed by the Chilean Nicolás Acuña ("Sitiados") and Alejandro Bazzano ("La Casa de Papel") were shown to the world. Acuña, in fact, is part of the Chilean delegation in Conecta FICTION. INES DEL ALMA MIA is an adaptation of Isabel Allende's novel of the same title and was shot in natural settings in Spain, Peru and Chile, specifically in locations such as the Atacama desert, the Valdivian jungle in the South and also in Santiago, where a citadel of more than 5 thousand square meters was built in the Laguna Carén to recreate the origin of the Chilean capital. The launch of the first episode of the series will take place during the second phase of Conecta Fiction, in September and in which the Chilean producer and director will participate.
Another moment starring Chile was this morning announcement of the 10 selected series in the Pitch Copro Series section that includes the Chilean project “Patagonian Winds”, an Invercine & Wood production, represented during Conecta FICTION by two of the strongest players of our local industry: María Elena Wood and Macarena Cardone.
“Patagonian Winds”, created by the screenwriter and playwright Guillermo Calderón and María Elena Wood, tells the story of Alice Benoit (44), an analytical and cold French journalist who travels to Chilean Patagonia determined to find her father, a lost tourist in Torres del Paine whom she has not seen for decades. Once there, Alice hires Jaime Soto (35), a cunning and charming private detective, to help her. Together they head to the Towers, but they arrive too late: a team of rescuers have just found the dead body of Jean Benoit, alias Johann Beck. A muleteer from the area, who was present at the finding, shows them a photo of the body with a bullet to the head. However, the forensic report determines that the cause of death is hypothermia. Alice and Jaime will do everything to find out the truth about Johann's case, but along the way they will encounter powerful obstacles and local networks of influences of which Alice will inevitably be one of the heirs. Selection in the Pitch Copro Series is key to this production given that from its creation, production and distribution, “Vientos Patagónicos” was designed as a co-production.
CHILEAN DELEGATION AND THE SERIES IN THEIR WAY TO SUCCESS
With strong female characters, impressive locations and trips to the Chile of the past as well as the present and most recent revolution, the local series are preparing their takeoffs with force and for four days they will be present in the market, adapting to the global context that has forced the world of television production to rethink their proposals.
Constanza Arena, executive director of CinemaChile: “We continue to work for and with the audiovisual sector to position Chile in the world not only as a country of cinema, but of fiction in general. For the past 10 years, Chilean series have been achieving very powerful industry milestones, which open the way to generate a hub of creativity and very powerful production. Especially now, when VOD platforms have grown in the market as a result of the pandemic, and there is a greater need for original, well-produced, well-acted stories. Chile has a lot of that to offer, and we need the international market to get our volume of content production out. CONECTA FICTION REBOOT 2020 is a tremendous opportunity to give visibility to our companies, talents and export content ”
This is how Chile will participate in the Conecta Fiction market, after having been the guest of honor a year ago, with 6 prominent producers of serial content for the small screen: Angela Poblete, producer of Fabula TV, María Elena Wood and Macarena Cardone, producers from Invercine & Wood; the producer and director of Promocine, Nicolás Acuña; Sergio Gándara, producer of Parox and producer, showrunner and director Hernán Caffiero, representing BTF Media's new subsidiary in Chile, BTF Chile.
Accessing a platform specially designed to serve those who need to find partners, seal co-production alliances and expand their network of contacts effectively, Chilean professionals will respond exactly to the profile that Conecta FICTION Reboot seeks to deliver: high profile participants and a careful selection of content aimed, as always, at an exclusively professional, high-level and decision-making profile.
The Chilean delegation will have the support of CinemaChile, a sector brand of the foreign trade agency ProChile, representing the 5 largest production houses, which have an outstanding track record in independent production and which today lead the exportation of international co-productions.
The great Chilean audiovisual production company, created by Pablo and Juan de Dios Larraín, has more than 15 years of experience in film, television, advertising and services. It has produced more than 20 films, receiving awards in Cannes, Venice, Berlin and Sundance, among others, in addition to the 2018 Academy Award for Best Foreign film, for "A fantastic woman. "One of the milestones in Chilean television production was the HBO series "Prófugos", with 2 seasons shown throughout the continent. This is what gave birth to Fabula TV in 2015. Since then, Fabula TV has developed projects for the main national television channels and is about to premiere the fictional series "La Jauría", in co-production with Fremantle, with Daniela Vega and Antonia Zegers as protagonists , Lucía Puenzo as showrunner and Marialy Rivas, Sergio Castro and Nicolás Puenzo as directors, acquired by Amazon Prime; and they have just released the series "El Presidente", also acquired by Amazon Prime, in co-production with Argentina and France.
"Fabula has been going through a deep internationalization process, for three years now, which has been carried out motivated by the increased demand for original content in Latin America and the world by OTTs and, to a large extent, thanks to our participation in international markets such as Natpe, MipCom, Conecta, Río Content, among several others. It has been due to the participation in these markets that we have been able to capitalize on the brand of the producer and extrapolate it to build the path that we are traveling today, with two high-end series ("El Presidente" and "La Jauría"), being released in a platform like Amazon Prime ”, says Angela Poblete, executive director of Fabula TV.
“Given the current context, we have prepared for our virtual assistance to Conecta Reboot 2020 a portfolio with projects for a world with extraordinary sanitary rules. Fewer locations, fewer people per scene, the same scenes rethought to have the least possible physical contact, and others. Such is the case of our main project: “Crisis”, based on a hostage situation carried out in a minimarket, for a specific number of hours, with a reduced cast and with limited and functional adjoining locations. The plot of the series project, in addition, makes visible a current and transversal political reality for all of Latin America; the impact of a live event, through television and social networks; the sacrifice of a father for a son. The other projects on the portfolio, are aligned with the current needs of the different OTTs and, all of them, are producible under the new rules imposed by the global health context", emphasizes Poblete.
INVERCINE & WOOD
Born from the union of two of the main audiovisual companies in Chile, recognized and awarded for the impact and quality of their work, Invercine & Wood has an extensive career in film and television that combines talent and experience to create, develop and produce fiction series and documentaries for national and international markets. With more than 300 hours of television productions in their track record, among them "Dignity", co-production with Germany, "Mary & Mike", co-production with Turner; and “Los 80”, the most watched and awarded series in the history of Chilean free television. Currently, they are in the pre-production stage of the series “Noticia de un secuestro”, based on the novel by Gabriel García Márquez, in co-production with Amazon Prime and working on an advanced development project with HBO Max, called “Enigma Guadalupe”. For this edition of Conecta, producers Maria Elena Wood and Macarena Cardone will be presenting, in addition to “Vientos Patagónicos”, the fiction feature film in development “Cúrame”, which will be directed and co-written by the director Pepa San Martín (“Rara”); and the long-awaited docufiction series "Los Jaivas: All Together", about the longest-running musical group in the world.
“We are very happy to be part of the Copro Series Pitch with 'Vientos Patagonicos', which is a co-development of Invercine & Wood and ZDF Enterprises, and was also supported by CORFO Development Fund. The creative team consists of Guillermo Calderón, Anastasia Ayazi and Francisca Lewin; and the executive production is by Patricio Pereira, Macarena Cardone, Matías Cardone and myself. Conecta will be the first public window of this series and we really hope that it will shake you and want to join us as co-producers in this intriguing and particular story "says Wood.
For her part, Macarena Cardone adds: "This year we will participate for the third time in the Conecta Fiction market. In addition to 'Vientos Patagonicos', we will promote other projects of our portfolio such as the feature film 'Cúrame' that tells the story of Ivy, a teenager who dreams of being a trap singer and arrives from the south of Chile to the capital (after the death of her parents), to know everyone in Santiago and also an impossible love; for this film we are mainly looking for co-producer partners. The other project is a documentary series of two episodes on the history of the great musical group Los Jaivas and which is already in post-production, and for which we are looking for sales agents and broadcasters".
Led by Nicolás Acuña, director and producer of film and television whose latest work is the long-awaited adaptation of Isabel Allende's novel of the same name, "Inés del Alma Mía", Promocine seeks to maintain its international presence and continues to establish links with important television stations and producers in the Ibero-American territory. The production house has an extensive history that includes the premiere of "Berko: el arte de callar", a series made for FOX Premium "Sitiados" (Sieged), a historical series and one of the most viewed in Latin America (in VOD) in 2016.
Acuña says: “We were among the first Chilean producers to participate in Conecta Fiction and we have been present in all its editions. It is a very important market for Promocine, where we could bring RTVE and AMAZON to the series "Inés del Alma Mía". In the second edition we got the FOX co-production for the mini series "Berko" and in the third, the distribution in Europe for "Berko". And regarding the projects that they will present in this online edition of the audiovisual market, he adds: “We have three fiction series projects: “Almonacid”, a policeman starring a Mapuche detective written by Julio Rojas (“La vida de los Peces”); “Estallido”, a series based on the events that occurred in Chile in October 2019, written by Rodrigo Cuevas, screenwriter and author of “Los 80”; and "Victoria", a western set in Patagonia, where a young Belgian engineer is hired by President Balmaceda to design a railway line that will join two oceans at the end of the world in 1920". Promocine is a production company that has produced more than 500 hours of fiction and has stated that its motivation is "the search for stories that reflect on the human condition".
With 17 TV series in its catalog, produced for local broadcasters such as CHV, TVN and C13; two web series and also, the production of 8 feature films (fiction and documentary, all festival awarded) the company is looking for new business models and for this reason it has been a precursor of international television co-productions with two projects: "Bichos Raros", co-production between TVN and Argentine Public Television and the recent "Héroes Invisibles", co-production between PAROX and YLE (Finnish public channel).
At Conecta Fiction they will arrive with their ambitious project in development “Puente de plata”, a narco series and a feminist melodrama, set in the 1950s in Valparaíso, Chile. It is currently in state of development and looking for partners to raise funds. Outstanding director Marcela Said ("The Dogs", Cannes) is confirmed to direct, and an international cast of actors will make this series a great international product.
Gándara affirms that “at Conecta Fiction we can connect with large platforms and producers in Spain and Mexico, with whom we can co-produce and find distributors for Spanish-speaking TV territories interested in telling the story of the origin of the distribution of cocaine in the world. This project is the true prequel to "Narcos" ". And he adds: “This is the second time that we have participated in the market with Parox. We are here again because the previous experience was very enriching. These days we will focus on promoting our complete catalog for the sale of content, with special emphasis on the wide range of projects currently in development. For them, we are looking for co-production partners and international broadcasters to join us in making these projects real. ”
Just a few weeks ago, the renowned audiovisual producer BTF Media (which has been nominated for an International Emmy and has a broad portfolio of successful series such as "The Secret of Selena" or "Until I Met You") announced that it would officially open its new office in Santiago de Chile, confirming that BTF Media's founding partners, Francisco Cordero and Ricardo Coeto, will join forces to carry out this new venture with Chilean Hernán Caffiero, award-winning director, producer and showrunner. The opening of this office in Chile adds to the growth of BTF Media, which already has offices in the United States, Mexico, Argentina and Spain. "BTF Media is a company that is constantly looking for new talents, so we will not only develop the projects we had been working on since before this agreement, but we will also look for ideas and projects that allow us to generate avant-garde and high-impact content from Chile, in addition to entering the field of production services, positioning ourselves in Latin America as one of the most reliable companies with the most experience in service”, says the Chilean producer.
Hernán Caffiero has dedicated his career to directing and producing film and series, highlighting his 2018 international Emmy-winning series, “Una Historia Necesaria” in which he served as a screenwriter, director, producer and editor. For Caffiero "the experience lived in 2019 at Conecta Fiction was tremendously favorable for our team, as it was the beginning of the connection that today has allowed us to form the production office of Break The Format (BTF) in Chile". And he confirms that “during this week of work at Conecta, in addition to publicizing the emergence of BTF Chile - dedicated to creating original content and providing production services for foreign series and films that wish to be shot in Chile, also promoting enormous Chilean technical and professional potential, as well as the most spectacular and varied natural locations in this part of the world-, we will seek to connect with filmmakers from other countries to scout for talent and new projects, as well as the opportunity to present the second season of "A Suspended Mourning" (UHN II) and the winning series of the Fund for the Promotion of Excellence in Television of the CNTV (National Counsil for TV of Chile) called 'Raza Brava', among other projects ”.
“A Suspenden Mourning II” will present 8 emblematic cases of the Chilean social outbreak, which took place in different regions of the country and which accounted for the unprecedented mobilizations since the return to democracy in Chile. The focus will be on the victims of human rights violations, on their life stories and their complexities, the motivations and sensitivities that ultimately resulted in a social awakening that has had a strong impact on Chilean society until today. Although the work is currently partly financed in Chile, Caffiero emphasizes that “we consider that it is necessary to access other financing networks to achieve the quality that a project of this magnitude requires. These are stories that must be told in a professional way, captured with sensitivity and produced under the best technical and cinematographic standards ”.
"Raza Brava" will portray the story of a marginal Chile during the last years of the Dictatorship and the first years of the return to democracy, through the eyes of two friends from a popular neighborhood on the outskirts of Santiago, who will embody the wishes for freedom of an entire generation that is wildly seeking success and recognition, and find in soccer an opportunity to build their own identity and be part of a collective feeling. This is how both friends will give themselves completely to the fans of the most popular soccer club in Chile, Colo Colo.
