The film starring Alfredo Castro, directed by Rodrigo Sepúlveda and based on the famous novel of the same name by Pedro Lemebel, just launched its first official trailer and looks for an international distributor.
More than 40 Chilean professionals will participate in this first online edition of the Cannes Film Festival’s Marché du Film, an industry event that will take place between 22 and 26 June.
Cinemachile, a sectoral brand of Prochile, will promote national projects by carrying out a complete work agenda during the market that will support the reactivation of local industry in the midst of the global health crisis. In addition, CinemaChile will launch its new International Film Catalogue 2020, a publication of 97 new features and short films that will have their premiere in the next 12 months.
After an intense year of work, the Chilean film “My Tender Matador”, directed by Rodrigo Sepúlveda and produced by Forastero (Chile), Tornado (Argentina), Caponeto (Mexico) and Zapik Films (Chile), is ready for its premiere and they released today the first official trailer, on the brink of the start of a new version of the Marché du Film de Cannes, where the Chilean producers Florencia Larrea and Gregorio González will be looking for the best international distributor for this highly anticipated production.
With a cast led by Alfredo Castro and made up of talents such as Amparo Noguera, Luis Gnecco and Mexican Leonardo Ortizgris, the film features the work of musicians Pedro Aznar (in charge of the soundtrack) and Manuel García, and with the cinematographic direction of the renowned Chilean cinematographer Sergio Armstrong. “My Tender Matador” transits between melodrama and political thriller, narrating in 93 minutes the love story between “La loca del frente” (Castro), a gay man who embroiders tablecloths for military wives, and Carlos (Ortizgris), member of the Patriotic Front Manuel Rodríguez, set, like the book, on the eve of the attack on Augusto Pinochet in 1986.
“Lemebel not only stood out as a great writer and visual artist, but also as a strong defender of the social outcasts, becoming a true icon of counterculture and sexual dissent. “Tengo Miedo Torero” (2001) was his first novel, which was more than a year on Chile’s best-selling list and was translated into English, French and Italian. That is why the film “My Tender Matador” is a unique cultural milestone, necessary for Chilean cinematography, not only due to the quality of its cast and technical equipment, but also due to its artistic relevance, social and political, which has become even more important after the social outbreak of October 18 as the new scenario facing Chile today, “says Florencia Larrea, executive producer of the film.
Meanwhile, Constanza Arena, executive director of Cinemachile, says that “This is a special year for Chilean cinema, the pandemic hit us all, and while adapting so quickly to it, we will be part of this version of the Marché du Film online, so we’re putting our claws into it by getting ahead with all the projects that have been on hold for a while and are now being reactivated. One of them is, without a doubt, the battlehorse of Forastero, one of the most important companies that will be present in the French market and that is in the final stage of postproduction, a long awaited film for the world outside. Internationally, it is one of the titles that the festivals are waiting to see and thus to have its international premiere, I talk about “My Tender Matador”, with Alfredo Castro in a role that will be unforgettable and under the direction of the talented Rodrigo Sepúlveda. This film is also going to be our own little battlehorse in the most important film market in the world”.
CHILEAN DELEGATION AT MARCHÉ DU FILM
With thousands of professionals from around the world, the main European meeting of the film industry of the year will start on Monday (virtually): the Marché du film de Cannes, announced by its director a few months ago, Jérôme Paillard will not replace the experience of being in Cannes, but he will offer an effective and functional platform for showing films, buying them, funding projects or finding partners.
This year, our country will be present with the participation of more than 40 professionals who are already accredited in the market. The Chilean presence will mean that producers start or even confirm agreements that could mean financing, work and continuity of audiovisual works that are in stand-by given the current pandemic that has kept the audiovisual industry on edge, but that thanks to instances such as these it will be able to start its reactivation, working through a complete digital platform that includes virtual stands and pavilions, meeting rooms, market screenings, talks, conferences, speed meetings and a programme dedicated to virtual reality.
Cinemachile, Prochile’s sectoral brand, will join by participating in the event for another year not only to promote the work of all national producers, but also by launching the new International Film Catalogue 2020, a publication composed of 97 audiovisual works, between feature and short films, which will consolidate their release in the next 12 months, until May 2021.
“We arrived in Cannes with a completely opposite panorama to last year. In fact, the world situation has forced us to quickly change our strategies, in particular in the audiovisual sector, incorporating a digital and distance dynamic, but no less effective . That is why our presence in this version will be through a virtual booth, where Chilean producers will be able to show to the world the great quality and identity that stands out to the national productions belonging to the Chilean audiovisual sector, which in 2019 exported more than 40 million dollars, showing how Chile manages to position itself on the international scene “says Prochile’s director, Jorge O’Ryan.
THE TALENTS OF THE AUDIOVISUAL PRODUCTION
As part of the Marché du Film online, there will be a new edition of the Producers Network, an event that brings together more than 500 producers from all over the world in order to generate exchange opportunities and thus stimulate co-productions. Among the five countries that will have a spotlight in their audiovisual production only two are South American and one of them is Chile through Cinemachile, which will host once again during the industry program. The five Chilean producers that will be presented at the online event are Roberto Doveris from Niña Niño Films, Rocío Jadue from Fabula, Macarena López from Manufactura de Películas, Andrés Mardones from Altiro Films and Clara Taricco from La Forma Cine.
ONLINE CHILEAN CINEMA SHOWCASE FOR THE WORLD
A milestone in the Chilean presence will be the so-called “The Cinema Chile Screening Room”, a virtual room in which around 18 of the most exciting Chilean films of recent time will be screened, between fictions and documentaries, and will be available to all professionals accredited at the Marché du Film. Five different films will be available each day, with a unique style, presented in partnership with the sales agent for each title. The program includes titles such as the award-winning documentary “Lemebel” by Joanna Reposi and the Venice premiere “Ema” by Pablo Larraín, to animations such as the acclaimed “The Wold House” by Joaquín Cociña and Cristóbal León, and “Nahuel and the magical book” directed by Germán Acuña, selected in the official competition of Annecy.
NEW INTERNATIONAL CATALOGUE OF CHILEAN CINEMA
More than 90 films and around 100 national directors are part of the 2020 edition of the new International Film Catalogue, which will be available from Monday on the Cinemachile website. The launch of the publication will take place, as is already the tradition, within the framework of the Marché du Film de Cannes and will mark the beginning of the national participation in the French industry meeting. The new films of the catalogue, which will be released over the next 12 months, build a multi-faceted narrative about a constantly changing world and feature works by filmmakers with extensive trajectory and also new talents. The catalogue will circulate through the main international markets and festivals, serving as a tool for the promotion and marketing of the productions of the year of our country.
